Respect Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control

The Respect Do Not Track (DNT) & Global Privacy Control (GPC) setting in WPLegalPages allows your website to automatically respect privacy preferences that visitors have enabled in their browser. When activated, this feature ensures that users who have opted out of tracking through DNT or GPC are not tracked, helping your site stay compliant and build trust.

What is Do Not Track (DNT)? #

Do Not Track (DNT) is a browser feature that allows users to signal to websites and online services that they do not want their online activities tracked.

DNT is not legally enforced in most jurisdictions, but it’s considered a best practice for privacy-friendly websites.

What is Global Privacy Control (GPC)?

Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a newer privacy preference signal built into certain browsers and extensions.

  • Unlike DNT, GPC is legally enforceable under some data privacy laws, such as CCPA/CPRA (California).
  • GPC communicates a user’s request to websites not to sell or share their personal data.
  • Recognizing GPC can help you avoid legal risks if your site targets visitors from jurisdictions where it’s required.

Why Respect These Settings? #

Enabling this feature in WPLP ensures that your site:

  • Complies with regional privacy laws (especially in California).
  • Builds trust and transparency with your visitors.
  • Reduces the risk of privacy complaints or violations.
  • Shows that your business is proactive in protecting user data.

How It Works in WPLegalPages #

When the Respect Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control option is enabled:

  • The plugin automatically detects if a visitor’s browser has DNT or GPC enabled.
  • If detected, the plugin:
    • Blocks tracking scripts that would otherwise collect user data.
    • Prevents non-essential cookies from being set.
    • Ensures the user’s preference is respected without requiring additional action.

This works seamlessly with your cookie consent banner, making sure you’re covered both technically and legally.

How to Enable the Setting #

Follow these steps to activate DNT & GPC respect in WPLegalPages:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Legal Pages > Advanced Settings
  2. Find the option “Respect Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control” and enable that.
  3. Click Save Changes to apply the setting.

Once enabled, your website will automatically adjust tracking behavior based on the visitor’s browser privacy preferences.
